On Sunday 10th May 2026, a visit was made to the British Engineerium in Hove, where members experienced both a guided tour and an informative talk. The visit provided a unique opportunity to see historic engineering machinery in operation and to learn about the development of water supply systems in Brighton. It was an engaging and memorable experience that combined practical observation with historical insight.

The visit began with a guided tour led by a knowledgeable volunteer. The tour started in the workshop, where a small stationary steam engine was demonstrated. This engine powered belts that drove various machines, offering a clear example of how mechanical energy was distributed in traditional industrial settings.

The group then moved to the Boiler House, where one of the original boilers had been fired up. Seeing the boiler in operation gave a vivid impression of the scale and power involved in steam engineering. A major highlight of the tour was the chance to observe a working pumping engine. Originally, the Goldstone pumping station housed two Woolf compound beam engines, but today only No. 2 engine remains. It was running during the visit, making it especially significant as the only surviving operational example of its kind.

History of Brighton’s Water Supply

Following the tour, a talk was delivered by John Walter, focusing on the history of Brighton’s water supply. The presentation traced the rapid development of Brighton, particularly during the early 19th century. The influence of the Prince Regent and the construction of the Royal Pavilion helped establish Brighton as a fashionable destination, while the arrival of the railway in 1841 made day trips accessible, leading to a dramatic population increase that doubled in just 14 years.

Initially, Brighton relied on wells and dew ponds for water. As demand grew, more advanced systems were required. One notable example discussed was the Woodingdean well, which reached a depth of 1,285 feet, making it the deepest in the world at the time.

The talk continued with the development of pumping stations. The Lewis Road pumping station featured a 97-foot well and used two small Cornish beam engines with three boilers. As demand increased, additional engines were installed in 1838–39, including two Woolf compound engines.

To meet the needs of the expanding western side of Brighton, a new site was required. After surveys and test drilling, Goldstone was selected in 1866. Initially, it operated with one two-cylinder Woolf compound engine, but later a second well and engine were added. Even this expansion proved insufficient, leading to further developments at Shoreham, Patcham and Mile Oak.

The final steam-powered pumping station was constructed at Falmer in 1903–04. After the First World War, technology shifted towards electric motors driving centrifugal pumps, beginning with installations at Balsdean. At Goldstone, steam power continued until the installation of two centrifugal pumps in the late 1950s, after which steam was no longer used.
